Abstract

This study investigates the artistic manifestation of Quranic verses and Prophetic traditions in the poetry of Mawlawi Mohammad Hanif Hanif Balkhi, a distinguished contemporary poet and writer from Balkh. The research aims to identify the Quranic āyāt (verses) and ahādīth (Prophetic traditions) reflected in his poetry, through which he seeks to guide society toward Islamic values by means of literary expression and artistic creativity. The central focus of the study is the profound influence of the Qur’an and the Sunnah on Balkhi’s poetic works, which demonstrate his scholarly understanding and artistic interpretation of divine revelation and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, particularly in a period characterized by social unrest and the growing influence of foreign cultures. Adopting an analytical-descriptive approach, the study examines how Balkhi’s poetry reflects Quranic verses and Prophetic traditions, highlighting his creative engagement with these sacred sources and his ability to convey religious concepts through poetic language. The findings reveal that the poet not only directly incorporates Quranic and Prophetic texts into his poetry, but also skillfully conveys their meanings through exegetical interpretation (tafsīr) and poetic reinterpretation (ta’wīl). Furthermore, he employs various literary techniques, including allusion, quotation, subtle reference, lexical adaptation, and semantic application, to integrate Quranic principles and Prophetic teachings into the structure of his poetry. This study demonstrates Balkhi’s deep commitment to Islamic scholarship and his dedication to employing poetry as a medium for explaining and disseminating Islamic teachings. By analyzing selected examples from his poetry, the research clarifies his methodological engagement with Islamic sources. It establishes his distinctive position among contemporary poets influenced by the Qur’an and the Prophetic traditions.
